The Problem

Following the 2020 global pandemic, MarcoPolo Learning, then an Emmy-nominated developer of an early childhood education company, pivoted from a direct-to-consumer business model to serve the US school market. We needed to develop new analytics features that offered visibility into product usage and met the requirements of school districts.

My role

I designed and worked with the engineering team to implement new analytics features as part of a backend revamp.

Discovery

Measurement begins with a strong theory of action and clarity around objectives. To ensure that our new analytics system provided a 360-degree view of every user throughout their life cycle, I facilitated multiple working sessions with the education, operations, and UX team to understand the product’s design intentions and analytics use cases. These sessions included open-ended discussions, structured teardowns of learning analytics features offered by competitor products, and co-design sprints with product implementation teams and educators.

Development

I created a detailed analytics taxonomy that mapped out the technical specifications of how every user action should be recorded and worked closely with the engineering lead to design a lightweight data pipeline that would be rapidly implemented.
